In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Philadelphia; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in Pennsylvania are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Philadelphia is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Pennsylvania's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Great first time experience at Gyu-Kaku. The service was great and they explained all the different menu options clearly. All the marinades are gluten free and they were able to tell us which meat option was not gluten free and make an easy switch. Would highly recommend if you are hungry and looking for a good Japanese BBQ experience!

Iβve always enjoyed the food at Gyu-Kaku, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I spent nearly $80 on my order and arrived to pick it up. I briefly stepped away to grab a few items, came back, let the employee who took my order know I had returned, paid, and was told, βYou can sit down and Iβll come get you.β I then waited on the bench for about 25 to 30 minutes. Eventually, I became frustrated and went to ask what was going on. As soon as the employee saw me, the first thing he said was, βI forgot about you.β To be honest, I found that insulting. I understand the restaurant was busy, and mistakes happen. Iβve worked in customer service and know that things can get hectic. But I was also a paying customer, and hearing that I had simply been forgotten made me feel like my patronage didnβt matter. The issue wasnβt even the wait itself. It was the way it was handled. A more appropriate response would have been something like, βI sincerely apologise for the wait. Thank you for your patience.β Even if you did forget a customer, saying βI forgot about youβ directly to them isnβt the best way to handle the situation. The food here is still great, and Iβve generally had

Itβs a great spot to go with friends or family because cooking at the table makes the experience fun and interactive. Just a heads up it gets really hot around the grill. Most of the food we ordered was really good. The things I didnβt love were the fried chicken bites (the texture felt strange and the inside looked a bit purple) and the ramen the broth just wasnβt for me. But that might be personal preference. Besides that, everything else was good, and I still think itβs worth going at least once for the experience. Itβs a nice place to try with a group and enjoy the grill style cooking.

Itβs a great spot for Japanese style food. The calamari appetizer is amazing. You can find good sake and drinks with hotpot and bbqs. The service was a bit slow with some of the items and bar area unavailable.

We did all you can eat and the service was quick and great. Nice waiters. Atmosphere can be better though as it was really hot inside the restaurant especially the last room where there's actually no AC, so they kindly seated us somewhere else. They should have a better AC system esp with all the grills plus kitchen in the restaurant. Meat qualities were pretty good (marinated ones were bit too sweet for my liking) but we got the boba ice cream mochi dessert, and the texture was really abnormal/dry/crumbly that a mochi should not be. Tbh I'm pretty sure that mochi ice cream was around 5 years old judging by the texture and how the mochi just fell apart after taking a bite. I know it's a meat restaurant so who cares about the dessert but we were really turned off by it at the end of our meal.
